On 9 March 2020, after the COVID-19 pandemic situation, a national lockdown is imposed in Italy. Further restrictive measures come into force with the #IoRestoaCasa Decree, decreto of March 11. All these measures are extended several times until the beginning of June, when a gradual relaxation of the bans begins.

For the country it was one of the hardest moments in recent years from a social, relational and economic point of view.

In this state of suspended reality in which habits and everyday life have suffered a sudden setback, the reality of media and communication has taken on particular forms and tones.

Perhaps as never before, these channels have become a constant and habitual background that has helped to create a feeling of unity between people at a time when relationships and exchanges were forcibly suspended. During these months, some recurring sounds have provided a general background to almost all of the Italian population.

Among these, the declarations of the then Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, the decrees modified several times, the hygiene rules to combat contagion, the ads increasingly oriented to offer goods and services linked to a life carried out solely inside homes, the songs from the balconies born spontaneously to create a new sense of community, without forgetting all those daily sounds generated by a life totally spent within the walls of the house.

Pandemic Background relives the set of sounds and noises and the constant feeling of emptiness and suspended time that characterized the homes of Italian citizens at that precise historical moment.
